Types of Squirrels
Squirrels are the acrobats of the backyard, and better foresters than most people: the acorns and nuts they bury and forget grow into whole stands of oak and hickory. The family runs from bushy-tailed tree squirrels to ground squirrels, and the gliding flying squirrels most people never see. Here are the squirrels in the Huck field guide.

Are chipmunks and prairie dogs squirrels?
Yes, both belong to the squirrel family along with ground squirrels, marmots, and woodchucks. "Squirrel" covers far more than the gray acrobat at your feeder.
What is the all-black squirrel in my yard?
Almost always a melanistic Eastern Gray Squirrel, a common dark color form of the ordinary gray, not a separate species. In some towns the black form is the majority.
