The American Red Squirrel, also called Pine Squirrel or Chickaree, is a feisty, chattering boreal squirrel that defends large conifer-cone middens through the winter. It is an important prey species for boreal predators including martens, goshawks, and great gray owls. Red squirrels have been shown to time their reproductive season to cone crop availability, adjusting breeding dates based on cues about food supply.
