Types of Falcons
Falcons are the fastest birds alive, built for speed with long pointed wings and a notched beak for dispatching prey in the air. The Peregrine stoops on its targets at over 200 miles an hour. Here are the falcons in the Huck field guide, with how to identify each.

What is the difference between a falcon and a hawk?
Wing shape is the clearest field mark. Falcons have long, slender, pointed wings and fly with quick deep beats; most hawks have broader, rounded wings and soar on them. Falcons also kill with a notch on the beak rather than with the feet alone.
What is the smallest falcon?
The American Kestrel, barely bigger than a jay, is the smallest and most common falcon in North America. It hovers over fields and roadside wires hunting insects and voles, and the male is a colourful rust and blue-grey.
