Types of Hummingbirds
Hummingbirds are the smallest birds alive and the only ones that can fly backward, beating their wings up to 80 times a second and hearts over 1,000 times a minute. East of the Rockies you get essentially one breeder, the Ruby-throated; the West is a glittering free-for-all. Here are the hummingbirds in the Huck field guide.

What is the only hummingbird in the eastern US?
The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the sole widespread breeding species east of the Great Plains. Any hummingbird at an eastern feeder in summer is almost certainly one, though rare western strays turn up in late fall.
How do I attract hummingbirds?
A feeder of plain sugar water (one part white sugar to four parts water, no dye) plus native tubular red and orange flowers. Keep feeders clean and change the water every few days in heat to prevent mold.
