Foxes are the cats of the dog world: light, low-slung, and famous for pouncing on prey with a high, arcing leap. Is a fox a dog or a cat?
A fox is a canid, in the dog family, but it hunts like a cat: stalking, pouncing, and even climbing (the Gray Fox scales trees). Vertical-slit pupils and retractable-feeling claws add to the cat-like impression, but genetically it is all dog.
Are foxes dangerous to pets or people?
Rarely. Foxes are small and shy, and healthy ones avoid people. The realistic risk is to unattended chickens or very small pets. A fox out in daylight is usually just hunting, not sick.
