Types of Trout
Trout are cold-water fish of clean streams and lakes, and anglers prize them as much for the places they live as for the catch. They are sensitive to warm, polluted water, so a healthy trout stream is a sign of a healthy watershed. Here are the trout in the Huck field guide, with how to tell them apart.

What is the difference between trout and salmon?
They are close cousins in the same family. The simplest rule is that most salmon migrate to the sea and die after spawning once, while most trout stay in fresh water and can spawn several times. Some trout, like steelhead, do go to sea and blur the line.
How do you tell trout species apart?
Spot pattern and colour are the main clues: rainbow trout wear a pink stripe, brook trout have pale worm-like markings on a dark back, and brown trout carry dark and red spots with pale halos. Habitat and range narrow it further.
