Types of Ants

Ants are the most numerous insects on Earth, running vast underground cities that turn more soil than earthworms in many places. A few are pests indoors, but most are quiet recyclers and seed-planters. Here are the ants in the Huck field guide, with how to tell them apart.

Common questions

How do I tell ants from termites?

Three things: ants have a pinched, narrow waist, bent antennae, and, when winged, front wings longer than the back pair. Termites have a thick, straight waist, straight antennae, and four wings all the same length. The waist is the fastest tell.

Are fire ants dangerous?

Their sting is painful and leaves a small blister, and a disturbed mound can deliver many stings fast. For most people it is unpleasant rather than dangerous, but a small number are allergic and should seek help if they have trouble breathing after being stung.
