Common questions

What is the difference between largemouth and smallmouth bass?

The quickest tell is the mouth: on a largemouth the jaw hinge sits behind the eye, on a smallmouth it stops under the eye. Largemouth prefer warm, weedy, still water; smallmouth like cooler, rockier, moving water.

Is a largemouth bass actually a bass?

Not in the strict sense. Largemouth and smallmouth are black basses, members of the sunfish family, while true basses are a separate group that includes the sea basses and striped bass. They came to share the name by resemblance.
