What is the difference between a lizard and a salamander?

Lizards are reptiles: dry, scaly skin, clawed toes, and sun-loving. Salamanders are amphibians: smooth, moist skin, no claws, and tied to damp places. A scaly animal basking on a hot rock is a lizard.

Are any North American lizards venomous?

Just one native, the Gila Monster of the desert Southwest, plus its Mexican relative the beaded lizard. Their bite is painful but very rarely fatal, and they are slow, reclusive animals that bite only when handled.
