Types of Dolphins
Dolphins are small toothed whales, fast and social and found in every ocean and a few great rivers. The Common Bottlenose is the one most people picture, but there are many more, from the tiny to the boldly patterned. Here are the dolphins in the Huck field guide, with how to identify each.

What is the difference between a dolphin and a porpoise?
Look at the mouth and fin. Dolphins usually have a beak and cone-shaped teeth, with a curved dorsal fin; porpoises have a blunt face and spade-shaped teeth, with a small triangular fin. Dolphins are also generally larger and more acrobatic.
Are dolphins fish?
No. Dolphins are mammals: they breathe air through a blowhole, are warm-blooded, give birth to live young and nurse them. They only look fish-like because they are built for the same job of moving fast through water.
