Types of Deer
Deer are the large mammals most people in North America see most often, grazing field edges at dawn and dusk and slipping back into cover by day. The White-tailed Deer alone ranges across most of the continent. Here are the deer in the Huck field guide, with how to tell the species apart.

What is the difference between mule deer and white-tailed deer?
Ears and tail give it away. Mule deer have large mule-like ears and a thin white tail tipped in black, and they bound with all four feet at once. White-tailed deer have smaller ears and a broad tail they raise like a white flag when they run.
Do female deer have antlers?
In almost all North American deer, no, only the males grow antlers, and they shed and regrow them every year. Caribou are the exception: both sexes grow antlers.
