Illustration of Axis Deer (Axis axis)

Also called chital, this spotted deer from the forests of India was brought to the Texas Hill Country in the 1930s and thrived, and it is now the most abundant exotic deer in the state. Stags keep their white spots for life and bugle rather than bellow, and a herd drifting through the oaks looks like a scene transplanted from another continent - which it is.
