What is the difference between a frog and a toad?

Toads are a kind of frog. In general "toads" have dry, bumpy skin and short legs for walking and live away from water, while "frogs" have smooth, moist skin and long legs for leaping and stay near it. The line is blurry and not scientific.

Why are frogs important?

They sit in the middle of the food web, eating vast numbers of insects and feeding birds, snakes, and fish in turn. Because they breathe and drink through their skin, a crash in local frogs is an early warning that something is wrong with the water.
