The quick tell
Go straight to the tail tip. A Red Fox’s tail ends in white, always - even on dark color morphs. A Gray Fox’s tail ends in black, with a black stripe running down its top. Legs help too: red foxes wear black stockings; gray foxes’ legs are rusty.

Which fox is in my wooded backyard?
Either - both thrive around people. As a lean rule, red foxes favor open edges, fields, and suburbs; gray foxes stick closer to brushy, wooded cover. The trail-cam tell remains the tail tip: white for red, black for gray.
