The Gray Fox is the only North American canid capable of climbing trees, using strong, hooked claws to ascend for escape and fruit foraging. Its salt-and-pepper grizzled gray coat distinguishes it from the red fox, with a rusty stripe along the sides and tail. It prefers densely vegetated habitats where its tree-climbing ability gives it a decisive advantage.
