Illustration of Northern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus)

The Northern Flying Squirrel is larger and more northerly than its southern counterpart, inhabiting boreal and montane forests across Canada and the northern United States. It has an unusually close relationship with underground fungi (truffles), which form the backbone of its diet and make it a key disperser of mycorrhizal spores. The squirrel's belly fur is white at the tips but gray at the base, distinguishing it from the southern species.
