The Texas Flying Squirrel subspecies inhabits pecan and oak woodlands of the Edwards Plateau and central Texas, at the southwestern edge of the southern flying squirrel's range. It glides between trees using its patagium membrane and is strictly nocturnal, rarely observed without deliberate spotlight surveys. Texas populations may rely more heavily on pecan nuts than northern populations.
