Illustration of Transient Killer Whale (Orcinus orca)

Bigg's (transient) killer whales are a genetically and behaviorally distinct ecotype of orca that specializes in hunting marine mammals—seals, porpoises, dolphins, and even great whales—rather than fish. They travel in smaller, quieter pods and communicate in very different dialects than fish-eating residents. Some individuals have been documented killing and dismembering adult gray whales through coordinated group attacks.
