Illustration of Utah Prairie Dog (Cynomys parvidens)

The Utah Prairie Dog is a federally threatened white-tailed prairie dog found only in the high grasslands of southwestern Utah—the most restricted range of any prairie dog species. It hibernates during winter and forms smaller colonies than the black-tailed prairie dog. Plague outbreaks have repeatedly decimated Utah prairie dog colonies, making population recovery difficult.
