Illustration of Texas Kangaroo Rat (Dipodomys elator)

The Texas Kangaroo Rat is a state-threatened species found only in the mesquite grasslands of north-central Texas. It has five toes on its hind feet like the banner-tail but is smaller, and is strongly associated with areas of sparse, short-grass vegetation near mesquite. Populations have declined due to shrub encroachment that makes the short-grass habitat unsuitable.
