Townsend's Chipmunk is a large, dark chipmunk of the Pacific Northwest coast known for its characteristic high-pitched chipping alarm call. It is one of the more arboreal chipmunk species, readily climbing conifers to access cone seeds and escape predators. This chipmunk spends considerable time in a state of torpor during the coldest winter months but is not a true deep hibernator.
