The Douglas Squirrel, or Chickaree, is a spirited conifer specialist of Pacific Coast forests, distinguished by its dark olive-gray back and orange-yellow underside. Like its eastern counterpart, it creates enormous caches of conifer cones and fiercely defends them with chattering alarm calls. John Muir described its voice as the most emphatic of all forest voices.
