Illustration of Eastern Coyote (Canis latrans)

The Eastern Coyote (sometimes called 'coywolf') is a notably larger population of coyote that hybridized with wolves as it expanded into the northeastern United States and has become thoroughly established in every major urban area from Toronto to Washington, D.C. It handles deer-sized prey better than western coyotes due to its larger size. The call of the coyote—now heard in Central Park—is one of the most successful stories of wildlife adaptation to human-modified landscapes.
