The Giant Mexican Shrew is the largest shrew in North America and the sole member of its genus, found only in tropical dry forests of western Mexico. Its large size relative to other shrews may reflect adaptation to a drier, more unpredictable food environment where larger prey items are worth pursuing. It inhabits rocky ground in tropical dry forest.
