The Gray Four-eyed Opossum is named for the pale spots above each eye that resemble a second pair of eyes. It is a semi-arboreal opossum of tropical forests from Mexico through South America. Despite its name, the spots above the eyes are not functional but may confuse predators. It is an excellent swimmer and often forages along stream banks.
