The Ornate Shrew is a small, coastal-California shrew found from the San Francisco Bay south through Baja California. It is associated with moist, dense vegetation in coastal marshes, riparian areas, and chaparral. The salt-marsh subspecies nativitatis is one of California's rarest subspecies and is state-listed as endangered.
