Illustration of King Rail (Rallus elegans)

The King Rail is the largest rail in North America — the size of a chicken — and inhabits freshwater and brackish marshes. Despite its size, it is extremely secretive and often detected only by its loud, accelerating 'kek-kek-kek' calls. Its rusty-orange breast and long, slightly curved bill are distinctive when it does emerge briefly from cover.
