The Lapland Longspur is the most abundant breeding songbird on the arctic tundra, forming enormous flocks of millions of birds during winter on North American plains and agricultural fields. Breeding males are boldly patterned with a black face framed by chestnut and white. The 'longspur' name refers to an elongated hind claw that helps it walk on snow-covered ground.
