The Black-bellied Cotton Rat is a dark-bellied cotton rat found in highland grasslands of Mexico and Central America. It is closely related to the hispid cotton rat but occupies higher elevation grassy habitats. Its darker underside differentiates it from similar species in the same montane environment.
