Illustration of Spear-marked Black Moth (Rheumaptera hastata)

The Spear-marked Black Moth is a boldly patterned geometrid with jet-black wings crossed by irregular white bands and streaks. Its contrasting pattern is thought to make it difficult for predators to judge distance or trajectory in flight. The inchworm caterpillar is pale with dark banding and feeds primarily on alder in moist forests.
