The Pinon Mouse is distinguished from other Peromyscus by its remarkably large ears relative to its body size. It is strongly associated with pinon-juniper woodlands of the American Southwest and is frequently found in rocky canyon habitats. Its large ears may enhance its ability to detect the movement of scorpions and insects in rocky microhabitats.
