The Hairy-tailed Mole is a medium-sized mole of the Appalachians and northeastern North America, distinguished from the Eastern Mole by its distinctly hairy tail. It prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soils in deciduous forests and often forages in surface leaf litter rather than tunneling. Like other moles, it can detect earthworms by smell and vibration through the soil.
