Heermann's Kangaroo Rat is a large, five-toed kangaroo rat of California's chaparral and grassland foothills, found on both sides of the Central Valley. It inhabits sandy and gravelly soils where it can readily excavate its burrow system. Many subspecies have been described reflecting the fragmented, island-like populations across California's interior valleys.
