The Woodland Jumping Mouse is the only jumping mouse with a white-tipped tail, distinguishing it from the closely related Zapus species. It inhabits cool, moist forest floor environments in the northeastern United States and Canada, and is among the longest hibernators of any North American mammal at six to nine months. It relies almost exclusively on fungi and seeds before building fat reserves for its long winter sleep.
