Illustration of Woodland Vole (Microtus pinetorum)

The Woodland Vole is a subterranean vole of eastern deciduous forests with small eyes, reduced ears, and a very short tail—all adaptations for a life spent tunneling through soft forest soil. It causes considerable damage in orchards by girdling tree roots and gnawing bark at the base of trunks beneath leaf litter. Also called the pine vole, it rarely ventures far from its burrow system.
