The Variable Cracker is a fascinating tropical butterfly that produces an audible clicking or cracking sound during territorial interactions between males — an ability unique among North American butterflies. Its cryptically patterned gray-and-blue mottled wings provide excellent camouflage on tree bark. It occasionally enters extreme southern Texas.

Tropical forests and forest edges in extreme southern Texas and Mexico
Diet
Larvae: Dalechampia vine. Adults: tree sap, rotting fruit, and dung
