Illustration of Varroa Mite (Varroa destructor)

The Varroa Mite is a tiny, reddish-brown external parasite of honey bees that has devastated managed and wild honey bee populations worldwide since its spread from Asian honey bees in the 20th century. It reproduces inside capped bee brood cells, feeding on developing bees and transmitting debilitating viruses. Varroa infestation is the leading cause of honey bee colony collapse worldwide.
