Illustration of Mexican Agouti (Dasyprocta mexicana)

The Mexican Agouti is an endangered rodent endemic to the tropical forests of Veracruz, Mexico, with extremely limited habitat due to deforestation. It is a specialist nut cracker with some of the strongest bite forces relative to body size of any rodent, allowing it to open palm and mahogany nuts. Conservation concern is high given the near-total conversion of its lowland habitat.
