The White-tailed Prairie Dog inhabits higher elevation grasslands in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah, distinguished from its black-tailed relative by its white tail tip and more scattered colony structure. It hibernates for several months in winter, unlike the black-tailed prairie dog which stays active year-round. Colony size is generally smaller and more isolated due to the patchier nature of high-elevation grassland habitats.
