The Southern Pygmy Mouse is a tiny rodent of Pacific-slope grasslands in Mexico and Central America, closely related to the northern pygmy mouse found in Texas. It is entirely dark, brownish-gray, and represents one of the smallest rodents in the Neotropical region. Its ecological role is similar to that of its northern relative—a herbivorous seed and grass feeder in open country.
