The Southern Spiny Pocket Mouse reaches the southern boundary of North America in Panama and northwestern Colombia. It is a forest floor rodent of humid tropical lowlands, recognizable by the mix of spiny and soft fur on its back. As with other Heteromys species, it is an important seed disperser in Neotropical forests.
