The Barren Ground Shrew is a small, brown shrew of Arctic and subarctic tundra in northern Canada and Alaska, one of the few shrew species adapted to the harshest Arctic landscapes. It remains active year-round beneath the snow in the subnivean zone, surviving on a diet of invertebrates and seeds. Its populations are an important food source for lemmings and Arctic fox during winter when other prey is scarce.
