The Snail Kite is a specialist raptor of Florida's wetlands that feeds almost exclusively on apple snails, using its deeply hooked bill to extract the snail from its shell. It is listed as endangered in the US and its population fluctuates dramatically with water levels in south Florida. The male is slate-gray with a red eye and red-orange cere.
