Illustration of Snowy Egret (Egretta thula)

The Snowy Egret is a small, all-white heron with a black bill, black legs, and brilliant yellow feet — the 'golden slippers' that distinguish it from other egrets. It is an active, energetic hunter that often stirs the water with its feet or runs after prey rather than standing still. Its breeding plumes were also highly prized and contributed to its near-extinction before protections were enacted.
