Longleaf Pine once formed one of the most extensive forest ecosystems in North America, covering 90 million acres of the southeastern coastal plain. Today less than 3% of original longleaf habitat remains. It supports one of the highest plant diversity levels of any North American ecosystem and is the sole habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.
