Coues's Rice Rat is a semi-aquatic sigmodontine rodent of coastal Mexico and Central America, related to but larger than the marsh rice rat of the southeastern United States. It swims readily and inhabits dense marsh and riparian vegetation. Named for Elliott Coues, one of the most prolific 19th-century American naturalists.
