Crawford's Desert Shrew is remarkably adapted for dry desert life, possessing extremely efficient kidneys that conserve water and spending hot hours sheltered beneath rock piles, in packrat middens, or beneath desert debris. With only three unicuspid teeth visible from the side, it differs dentally from Sorex shrews. It is one of the few shrew species to thrive in true desert habitats.
