Beargrass is a large, yucca-like plant of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts with long, grass-like leaves and tall stalks of cream-colored flowers. It was an extremely important plant for indigenous peoples of the Southwest for weaving baskets and rope. Bears eat the tender flower stalks and buds in spring, giving the plant its common name.
