The Marsh Shrew inhabits dense marsh vegetation along Pacific Coast streams and wetlands, and is notable for its ability to run briefly on water due to air-trapping hairs on its feet. It is extremely dark—nearly black—and is the largest shrew species in western North America. Populations are localized and fragmented along Pacific Coast drainages.
