Illustration of Painted Redstart (Myioborus pictus)

The Painted Redstart is one of the most dazzling wood-warblers, with brilliant crimson breast, jet-black back and head, and large white wing patches. It fans its tail and droops its wings while foraging — a behavior called 'flash-foraging' that may startle insects into revealing themselves. It is found in mountain oak-pine forests near the Mexican border.

Mountain pine-oak forests of southern Arizona and New Mexico
Diet
Insects flushed from foliage by wing-spreading displays
